Roswell Ghost Tour, Roswell, GA.
Most Friday and Saturday nights year-round
(check the schedule at http://www.roswellghosttour.com)
Roswell is a historic small town in the metro Atlanta area here in Georgia. On Saturday night, September 23, 2006, my husband and I finally took the Roswell ghost tour. The town is near our hometown, so I don't know why we took so long. This is a fascinating two-hour tour and I can't wait to take it again soon.
The only quibble I had with the tour is that since many of the houses are private residences or businesses, and others are in dense residential areas, we were not able to get close at all to them. For instance, at Mimosa Hall, which has a chilling tale attached to it, we had to stand at the end of the driveway and could really not see the house at all. The same was true of Barrington Hall, considered to be the finest example of Greek Revival architecture in America. We had to stand a block away. I do intend to go back and see them in the daytime, when they are open for tours.
On the other hand, we were able to go right into Founder's Cemetery, and that was my favorite stop on the tour. Our guide, David, was telling us that most "sensitives" are drawn to an area behind founder John Dunwody's grave. I, however, have been to that cemetery once before, and I headed straight to the obelisk-style tombstone of Roswell King, for whom Roswell is named. I put my hand on the tombstone and said something dumb like, "Remember me, buddy?" and my husband snapped the picture. Sure enough, it was the only picture we took in the cemetery that was just full of orbs. In general, I am not that impressed with orbs, but I was very amused that even the pictures we took all around that stone had no strange lights at all.
David told us accounts of hauntings caused by the typical tragic deaths and by events of the Civil War. In our group, there were a number of Roswell natives, and they added their own experiences and stories they had heard, which increased our enjoyment considerably.
I definitely recommend this tour. However, I advise taking a flashlight. The brick sidewalks of Roswell are very uneven and in places it is quite dark. I stumbled several times, since my night vision is basically non-existent.
